Cataract Eye Surgery London

What is cataract surgery?

Cataract eye surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures in the world today. At Vision Correction London we pride ourselves in providing one of the highest quality cataract eye surgery results in London. A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of the eye, which affects us all as we age. Some of us develop cataracts earlier than others but unfortunately with all of us now living longer, they have become one of life’s inevitabilities. Cataracts limit the amount of light entering the eye, preventing us from seeing as well as we could without them.

Cataracts are now treated using small-incision surgery, during which the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear, artificial lens.

What happens during cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is now typically done with local anaesthetic eye drops and takes around 10-20 minutes.

During the surgery, a tiny incision is made into the eye and the natural lens is removed with a sophisticated small ultra-sound probe. The capsule of the lens is left behind and this is used to house the new lens implant. Your new artificial lens is then inserted through the same incision.

Visual recovery is fast and by the next day most patients are already seeing better.

The team at Vision Correction London have performed over 3000 lens procedures and our rate of any complication is less than 1%.

The flexible intraocular lenses (IOLs) we use to replace the cloudy lens during cataract surgery are made from silicone or acrylic.

Monofocal lenses correct only distance or near vision. If you have monofocal lenses inserted which are set up for distance vision, you will still need glasses for reading and vice versa.

Multifocal lenses correct distance and near vision and offer a higher probability of achieving spectacle independence.

Toric lenses are used to correct astigmatism. Your surgeon will be able to advise you on which lenses would be most suitable for you.

Intra-ocular lens power calculations

The team at Vision Correction London use an advanced testing procedure known as biometry to accurately calculate the power of the lens that will be implanted in the eye.

The test examines various parameters inside the eye such as the eye’s length and corneal shape, and the position of anatomical structures within the eye.

Our surgeons combine a comprehensive ophthalmic examination and diagnostic tests with the latest lens power calculation software, known as the Hill-RBF calculator. This enables us to accurately select the right intra-ocular lens for your eye.

As technology and computer software improves, biometry has become more accurate and improves annually. The Hill-RBF calculator has been a great development in this software, and now allows us to offer an unparalleled level of accuracy.

Vision Correction London now use it as standard for lens calculations in cataract and refractive lens exchange surgery.
